the holidays are coming and i'm losing my mind. there's way too much stuff to play and review, and not nearly enough time. so here's a quick glimpse of some of n-gage's best (see our mini-review of the n-gage game deck). although there are more titles out there, these are all that i could test.

super monkey ball
this is a straight port of the gba version, with some of the frills and color stripped out. sadly, the designers forgot to put back in the bluetooth multiplayer support, an addition that is both painfully obvious and blatantly missing.

for those of you who haven't played this odd game, super monkey ball has you controlling the tilt of a big flat playing field as you try to roll a monkey-stuffed ball from one side of the field to the other. along the way you try to avoid drop-offs and holes, and collect bananas.
obviously, super monkey ball was never a very deep game, but it has always been fun to play, and that remains true in the n-gage version, despite a screen shape that might have made things difficult to control.
the game also includes several unlockable mini-games, all of which are single player only, although they cry out to be multiplayer.
pandemonium
i'm not the biggest fan of 2d/3d games like pandemonium, but this version of the 1996 ps game managed to impress me anyway.
although the sidescroll/platformer elements of the game left me a little bored in short time, the graphics are just phenomenal.
gameplay, much like in the original, is pretty straightforward: you have to leap and blast your way through a thin sheen of enemies. actually, my biggest complaint is the same one i had with the original: where the heck are the bad guys?
the game plays like you came to the party early; there's very little sound and almost no one around to disturb your rambling voyage through the strange world of pandemonium.
the bluetooth play is a lot of fun, allowing you to cooperate with a buddy as you try to make your way over the tricky jumps and moving platforms. there is also some arena play that allows you to race through a map trying to beat the downloaded ghost of another player.
sonicn
why, oh why, does this game keep crashing my lovely n-gage? i have a call into the folks at nokia to find out if this is a one-off. it must be because i've read no complaints about the game, and none of the other titles i've tried cause this problem.
it's too bad, too, because this really is a fun game to play.
i do have a few minor complaints. the major one is that instead of making this a game that works with the n-gage's admittedly peculiar screen shape, sega decided to put borders on the screen to transform the smallish vertical screen into a tiny horizontal one. so what you have is a very small, but very fun game to play.
this version of sonic is loosely based on sonic advance for the gba, and lets you pick between four characters, including sonic himself. of course, one thing never changes: your final objective is to take out dr. eggman. the game is a lot of fun to play and suffers no slow down despite the enhanced graphics of this latest version.
of course, at the end of level 1-2 the game tends to crash horrifically, temporarily turning my n-gage into a shrieking personal alarm until i shut it down–but the game hasn't been officially released yet so i'll just assume this is some sort of beta issue.
the game lets you choose between normal game play and time attack, where you are just trying to rip through the levels as fast as possible.
unfortunately, sonicn doesn't feature bluetooth or wireless gaming support, which is a big bummer because it really is a lot of fun to play.
tomb raider
although this is simply a remake of the original, it is near perfect recreation of that classic game–and don't forget it manages to run flawlessly on a console that fits in your pocket. of all of the games i've tried tomb raider and tony hawk are the two that go farthest to show just how spectacular the n-gage's 3d graphics really can be.
tomb raider uses all 12 of the n-gage's buttons in a way that manages to not be confusing, allowing you to sidestep, jump, roll, and blaze away with two guns in lara croft's archeological journey. gameplay is smooth, and, as always, so is the tiny croft, although in profile she looks more like a vogueing madonna than a bookish nymph. a newly added multiplayer feature allows gamers to try and outrace other crofts through different maps in the game through n-gage's online arena.
tony hawk's pro skater
this game really is an excellent remake of the 1999 playstation super-hit. sure, the graphics aren't quite as sharp, but they nearly are, and the play is just as smooth and fast as it has always been.
this n-gage title is certainly the best title of the batch reviewed here, with a full-scale punk soundtrack and sleek 3d graphics that make portable gaming addictive.
as always, the goal in tony hawk is to unlock levels with high trick scores and by completing specific goals. this version comes with all of the original levels plus a few additional ones. it also supports bluetooth play, which gives you four ways to play head-to-head with another n-gage-sporting friend.
n-gage arena play allows you to race against recorded top time and trick scores, view other people's best trick runs, and check out tips for the game through nokia's online service. i sure wish there were true, live head-to-head support for the arena, but it sounds like that won't be happening until next year at the earliest.
mlb slam!
i hate baseball in every form, including digital–seriously!–but i love this game.
i'd explain, but i can't. there's just something so cool about being able to pull out an n-gage and hammer off a few home runs or strike out a player or two.
this diminutive baseballer puts you in control of any of the 30 major league baseball teams as you attempt to put them through their paces in spring training match-ups, a condensed 81 game season, or a full 162 game season. you can also try your hand at creating a dream team by using the money earned in regular season play to sign the top guns in the sport.
no matter which type of game you pick, playing in mlb is a breeze. while batting, different buttons allow you to pick between normal and heavy hitting, bunting, or getting a man on a base to steal. once you hit the ball another button can order runners to try and run for the next base or home.
when you pitch you can pick the type you want to throw and control where it goes and how fast. once the ball is hit you control the man running for it and where he throws it. overall the controls are very well put together.
although the graphics in the game are very smooth, they tend to be far too generic for my taste, with the players really looking the same no matter who it happens to be.
finally, the game supports bluetooth play, so you can take on a buddy with your favorite real or fictional team sans wires.

i've played tomb raider (9:57am est thu nov 13 2003) on the n-gage, and it sucked. the colors all blended together so it was difficult to see what was what. the controls are awkward to use as well. this “system” won't be around in 6 months. – by bubbajones |
screenshots ?(10:06am est thu nov 13 2003) you can't take screenshots playing these on the sx1. or did you really 'play' them om the n-gage ? in that case, get a new pair of glasses. preferrably, the unbiased version. or, even better, set it on fire and post a video of it here. now that would be a real review. |

n-gage marketing(1:19am est fri nov 14 2003) i was bumming around the french quarter of new orleans and i met a friend of a friend who had a job showing people the phone, letting them play games on it, and free calls to people. sweet job. can't say about the phone, never held it. one thing does surprise me, however… this little diddy has an open source operating system. lots of neat features, i'll give it that. managed to give the guy the slip, since i didn't want to hear the spiel on where i can buy it. i guess i'll buy one when there's a 2 megapixel camera and a short range am/fm transmission ability (to play audio over nearby sound systems.) you guys are awfully hard on these things. i was too, until i read a bit more about what it can do. – by _d |
it can do:(3:37am est fri nov 14 2003) a lot of things, that's fur sure, but it does all of them extremely bad. well, except maybe for the windowbreaking part, it's almost on a par with a piece of rock in that department (this is not a good thing) i've actually held one (and used it). i still feel dirty… – by abbadon |
immpressed(5:22am est fri nov 14 2003) i liked the n-gage, i think it is pricey but i got it as an upgrade for my contract phone so it only cost me £50. i was in a store queing to buy some bits in a computer store and saw someone buy tomb raider for it, at the time i thought it was your standard generic scroller/shooter thing but when i found out more i had to get it. i have shown it to a lot of people and they were all very immpressed with it, i especially like the fact that it can play mp3s as ring tones. – by jaymondo |

msmobiles, kekkonen, amp71d00d . . .(10:59pm est mon nov 24 2003) msmobiles, kekkonen, amp71d00d – it's nice to see that the three of you share a brain (& undoubtedly a bed). obviously you're not paying attention: these were *mini-reviews*. are you expecting walk-thrus? and, remember this isn't your typical gaming system – it isn't a home console or a handheld. it's something new. that being said, i agree that it probably won't be around this time next year. i don't believe that the 'mobile gaming' concept is appealing enough to the demographic that could afford the machine at this pricepoint. but lighten up on the reviewer – after all he doesn't go to mickey d's and critique your burger flipping. – by mebbe triplets? |

stop being so aggresive on that(4:56am est sat may 01 2004) n-gage is only a first step into mobile-game console combination and such as one suffers a lot of flaws. but despite that, it just shows the big things that are to come (3gpp handsets burst-out given) and even for the novelty of the concept, it is worthy to have one [i do and have not regret it(yet?)].everyone who once owned a commodore64/spectrum/amstrad/amiga will understand that (or am i just a thirty something idiot? – could be that propably) – by mick |

n-gage kicks arse(6:38pm est mon jun 07 2004) i bet most of you havnt played on one. for starters you can put a spectrum, gameboy(normal+colour not gba), mame c64 and a nes emulator on it. before you even start with n-gage games you have access to over 10,000 games with those emulators not even including java games. the n-gage games are good games for a handheld, gba hardware is much better then n-gage i agree but its software that counts compare tonyhawk on gba with tonyhawk on n-gage. n-gage makes gba look crap. yes gba has loads more games for the platform but its been out longer. get a big mmc and put loads of emulator games and cracked n-gage games on it and theres hours of fun to be had without changing any cart. also it plays mp3 files and movies thats full videos on your phone, and yes its a phone. i have had an gba since its realese and i cant be arsed carrying it with me but my phone is always in my pocket thats my n-gage gamedeck if im ever in a cue i wip out my phone and have access to loads of games. yes the gba has better hardware, yes the n-gage is bigger then a normal phone and the controls arnt bad when you get used to them. give the n-gage a try, like i did. now i consider it to be the best phone and handheld console i have ever owned. go on give a n-gage a home today. p.s i dont work for nokia i just dont want anyone to miss out on this wandefull piece of hardware. – by n-raged |
me!(9:48pm est fri jun 25 2004) i bought ny n-gage when it first came on to the market, and soon became disheartened with it in a couple of months due to the price (and lack)of the games and the nokia software that powers the bloody thing. now i've never been one for nokia phones, i always thought they were company that made 'clitoris phones' and still do, but the n-gage has become my favorite gadget to carry around. why this change of heart? well first of all i threw away the cd that comes with it, becuase it only contains a link to the n-gage website that does nothing but confueses and frustrates you. second, i can download the games off some file sharing engine and finaly i bought a 128mb card for it, and now i find that i'm starting to believe that using it as a phone has become secondary to everything else. for me my n-gage acts as a card reader (a handy function i find), if i feel that i need to take a file or transfer some other info to a friends pc then it's a perfectly useful option to have. but to top it off, i can fit 5 full n-gage games, an album of music and a full length film on to it. so that makes me a very happy chappy! if you you don't believe me then it is obvious that you have not tried it. it is a shame though that nokia is a throw away company (ala, sega with its 32x, saturn and dreamcast) they have already anounced its replacement, the n-gageqd with no mp3 function, so there maybe reasons to slate nokia but lets not confuse the two. it's still a damn good piece of kit to have. – by mojo jojo |

what a bunch of fuktards!!!(5:11pm est mon jan 10 2005) the n-gage is probably the best hand held multi purpose system iv'e seen to date, you all compare it to other games machines when in fact these are out of their leauge for many reasons, 1) the n-gage is a pda, 2)gprs and other protocals allow for web browsing, 3) it can play movies and music, 4)its a java based system so software development is fairly straight forward, i could go on and on why the n-gage shouldnd be compared to other games machines, sure there are better machines for gaming but for all round capabilities the n-gage owwwnzzz!! – by koder-krypt |

i love my n-gage(8:33am est sun mar 06 2005) i can honsetly say my n-gage is one of my favourite possessions. apart from a few bugs here and there the whole system is great, loads of games, loads of different options and loads of potential. to view videos on the n-gage you need to download the nokia multimedia converter, search for it on google. ive got a 1gb card in mine which works fine, ive got every retail game on it from kazaa and 3 full dvds and 40-50 mp3s on top of that, all in my pocket, great in the car or on the bus. the n-gage is amazing, end of story! – by i hate chavs |
n-gage is cool!(12:19pm est mon mar 28 2005) the n-gage has been around for more than a year, to be in fact its been around about 1 year and 6 months. why you people think the n-gage is crap i don't know, because it aint just a games console, its a mobile phone, mp3 player, radio player, internet and portable gaming device – its also the 1st type of machine of its kind – full 3d graphics on a portable system and beats the psp and ds to it. also playing with other people on the arena is amazing….don't mock it till you've tried it! – by emo185 |
n-gage(1:23pm est tue mar 29 2005) i have an n-gage, there sweet. to put videos onto your game deck you need the nokia multimedia player, this then saves the file in a format which then can be played by the real 1 player on the fone. i have tony hawk's… its a good game i think, and red faction should be delivered tomorow! – by bruce jones |
n-gage the best all in one phone to date!(8:22am est sun apr 10 2005) ok sure you may say the n-gage doesn't have the camera and video function. but come on, how often you use it. any rather than having a poor quality phone and camera in there and increase the price unnecessarily. with mp3 player, fm radio, movie player and also stuff to organise your stuff it's a complete package. or yeah ofcourse, quality games! being able to store lots of things in the mmc card really helps. dotring a couple of n-gage games, mp3s, movies in it is all you need. useful during long trips. with bluetooth you can do lots of stuff with it. you can use the usb cable or get mmc reader to transfer big files from the pc. – by kamil |

n-gage (qd)(1:51am est sat jul 02 2005) wish i had an orig, i would like the mp3 player. but even so, my n-gage qd rocks my face off, and it would do the same for anyone else who tried it. it is a truly novel concept, and must be respected for that. also, it has survived (somewhat as the qd) and hopefully will continue on. * oh, and to those who say nokia is going the way of sega, just check out their site. if you haven't realized it, cell phones look pretty ugly. across the board. only two companies have done anything about this: 1 nokia and 2 motorola now, if you ask me, i'd much rather go for a nokia than a moto, you get better support and reliability. idiots(12:41pm est mon aug 15 2005) your all idiots!!!! comparing the ngage to psp, ds etc. is like comparing a n64 to a ps2!!! in case anyone didnt notice, the ngage is the first of its kind whereas the ds etc is evolved from many generations of handheld consoles. maybe you should wait till later generations of ngage come out before you dismiss the idea. there may be problems, but they will be fixed with more generations. also, after the initial 'rush' of psp users, how many people will carry it around in their pocket all the time? not many thats for sure. that thing is huge!!!! but you will always have your phone on you……think about that! oh and by the way, there may not be many games out now, but there will be soon. when the psp is just released there wont be many games for it, will there? try using your brain! n-gage distress(8:33pm est fri mar 31 2006) i am trying my best to find an n-gage qd and am not having fun doing it. the only ones i found were on ebay for 200$+ or so and that sucks. anyone got any grand ideas where i might be able to find an n-gage qd that is affordable? i even called nokia up and they said they could not help, only distributers would have such systems. (the phone companys and retailers like ebgames, or gamestop) if anyone knows anything that can help, email me at doublewidedepot@bellsouth.net thanks – by astralbeast |

n-gage, don't knock it…(6:59pm est thu aug 17 2006) yes yes, nothing fancy… and doomed to fail… but i picked up an n-gage (not a qd) from ebay for £20 a week ago, and a 2gb mmc card for £25 same day… it's now packed full of n-gage games (46 at last count) it plays mp3's ogg (music) avi xvid mov (video) mx mod mid (chiptunes) [etc] there are 1,000's of games in the 4 emulators installed (gameboy, c64, megadrive, & mame!) it has a guitar tuner (which works great), i can send sms from the desktop, and many other features… no really.. . many… not least of which it has remote desktop… it can control anything on the pc, like a remote control… .. . and you can even see the desktop on your screen. i was using it to control winamp from the garden this evening… handy! so yup… it maybe a bit late in the the day but i'm sticking up for n-gage ) – by some english bloke |
n-gage rulezz(11:52am est fri sep 15 2006) n-gage (not qd) is the best phone (of its price category) i have seen. i have it about 3 months and i couldnt say anything bad about it. it just rulezz and all those guyz who say that it sux havent ever had it in their hands, because if they would, they would say something a lot different. to: astralbeast: dont buy qd. it doesnt have mp3s and radio. it has smaller keys and its more expensive. – by tommy bazar |
